Overview

Exams that include "side camera instructions" are designed to allow more flexibility in where your webcam is placed.

A webcam with a broader view of the testing environment should provide a proctoring experience where you are 50% less likely to receive an interruption.

This "side view" is optional - your webcam can remain in the "front view" attached on your device screen, and you can click through the pre-exam steps without placing your webcam in the position shown in the on-screen instructions.

Where to put the webcam

The recommended webcam position is sightly behind you from either side.

The webcam view should contain your screen along with your head and hands.

So the webcam should be placed 1-meter away from you, if possible.

Consider mounting the webcan on a small tripod or stand, as shown in the images below.

This can keep it steady on a flat surface, or attached to something else with a clamp.

It is also acceptable for the camera to be in front of you on the side, and the view should focus on you and your hands.

Since this is optional, the external webcam can also be directly on the screen in front of you, similar to a built-in webcam.

What to do before an exam

When launching an exam, the first step is to click "Continue to Side Camera Instructions".

The next page will confirm that an external webcam is required, before you continue to the next pages to begin authentication.

After the room scan and screen recording, you'll go through steps to to support the placement of a webcam with a side view.

This includes an "overlay" on your webcam view, which can be helpful to arrange your webcam and workspace.

You can click the button (circled in green on screenshot) to switch the overlay to left/right angles.
