OUM takes student privacy very seriously and carefully evaluates all tools we use, including Honorlock. We chose Honorlock after comparing several options and found it to offer the best combination of security, privacy safeguards, real-time support and ease of use, and we are confident that it will serve OUM’s interests in protecting the integrity of its remote exams, while also protecting students’ privacy.

Honorlock only runs during an active exam session and doesn’t access your personal files or stay active in the background afterward. OUM reviewed the system carefully before adopting it, with particular attention to privacy and data security.

Here's helpful info and a 1-minute video on how your data is secured by Honorlock

Key points:

  • Honorlock does not use facial recognition. It uses a basic algorithm for "face detection" to make sure there is a person in frame.
  • Notifications are generated based on an AI algorithm. You may see a notification that "AI will flag the incident". This does not necessarily mean that there has been a violation. OUM staff review all flags, and any determination of violation will be made by an OUM staff member after thorough review.
  • Honorlock is a browser extension, not an app installed on your device, and does not have the ability to control your computer, read your passwords or download any files at any point in time.

There are a few actions you can take after your exam has ended if it makes you feel more comfortable about using Honorlock:

1. Remove the Honorlock extension when the exam is over.

Simply navigate to the extension in the toolbar of Chrome, right-click, and remove.

You can reinstall in under 30 seconds when you open the next exam.

2. Create a new Chrome profile to attempt your exams with Honorlock.

This means any bookmarks, passwords, etc., that you have saved will not show up in the Chrome window when you are testing.

When adding the Honorlock extension to Chrome, you'll see this message:

The disclaimer in the image above is from Google's Chrome Web Store, and is based purely on the permissions being granted to the extension.

This disclaimer message by Google has no awareness of any limitations imposed within the extension on how it accesses the functions it has permissions for.

Honorlock will only use those permissions as outlined in their privacy policy, limited to what’s necessary for exam proctoring.
